A step in the right direction, in the global spotlight, for the LGBT community. The Nato summit was responsible for orchestrating another positive step on the world stage for the LGBT community when Gauthier Destenay, the partner of Xavier Bettel, the prime minister of Luxembourg, lined up with the wives of the world leaders for an official photograph.
Xavier Bettel the third gay world leader and now, since the retirement of Iceland’s prime minister Johanna Siguroardottir and Belgium’s prime minister Elio Di Rupo, he is the only openly gay serving world leader. Mr. Bettel does not hide his sexuality, saying, on his marriage, that he had only one life and didn’t want to hide his life. However, he does not parade his personal life either, commenting “what happens at home remains private”.
The couple have attended a number of official occasions, including the wedding of Prince Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie in 2012.
